Podcasts, Podcasts, Read All About 'Em!

“Edit your life frequently and ruthlessly. It’s your masterpiece after all.” - Nathan W. Morris

Hey y’all,

Anyone a podcaster? I’m an avid novel reader, buttttt when your car is your office and you find yourself multi-tasking more than not - podcasts and audiobooks become your preferred method of gathering information, catching up on daily trends, or hearing a story.

My first podcast was S-Town. I listened to 6 of the 8 episodes on a one-man road trip to Columbus, OH from Raleigh, NC. Within the first 10 minutes of the initial episode I was hooked. The theme music, the narrator, the storyline, you name it. I LOVE true crime stories and anything with historical reference. Hosted by Brian Reed, S-Town was born from Serial and This American Life. An Alabama man named John, writes in to This American Life asking Brian to investigate the son of a wealthy family who’s been spreading gossip around town that he got away with murder, allegedly. Then in typical true crime fashion, someone else ends up dead.

The story takes a turn I NEVER saw coming (even if my friends tried to hint at it). I found myself experiencing raw emotion - I’m mean literally sobbing in the car. The story turns into a search for the truth, a hunt for possibly hidden treasure, and unearthing the mysteries of one man’s crazy life. I LOVED IT. YOU’LL LOVE IT. IT’S GREAT.

I’m always looking for a new series to follow and my friends probably wish I would just shut up about them but, sorry not sorry. I’m currently following 5 consistent podcast channels. To be honest, it pains me to have to wait in between episodes. I mean really, I could use an episode a day. I’m from the generation who binge watches an entire series on Netflix in 2 days, so what makes people think podcasts would be any different??

My current favorites:

This is my guilty pleasure - so please no judgement. If you’re between the ages of 18-45 and enjoy talking with your friends about anything and everything related to dating and relationships in this day and age, and I mean EVERYTHING, then this is the podcast for you. And although the title implies the content is strictly for women, this is SO not the case. They will often host male guests on the show to shed some male perspective on the topic of that episode. It’s real, it’s relatable, it’s vulgar, it’s fun, you get it. Hosted by the ladies behind the Instagram accounts @BrosBeingBasic and @OneHungryJew, this podcast is pee-your-panties hilarious. I’m serious, go follow their personal accounts and of course, @GirlsGottaEat.

YASSSSS QUEEN! If you’ve watched the revamp of Queer Eye on Netflix (let’s be real, if you haven’t, what are you doing with your life?!) and simply cannot get enough of the fab 5, like myself, finding this podcast was a godsend. Hosted by Jonathan Van Ness, the personal care guru on the show, Getting Curious is a [now] weekly exploration of all the things Jonathan and his listeners are curious about. From bees to pirates to racism, Jonathan brings in experts from their respective fields and dedicates 30 minutes to learning everything he can. All while preaching self love and empowerment. Okay, cute. I simply cannot get enough of Jonathan’s energy and enthusiasm, he is fire.

“A show that reveals that the worst monsters, are real”. Que memories of having your parent(s) check under the bed and behind the shower curtain for monsters. Sword and Scale is a true-crime podcast series with 5 seasons and currently over 100 episodes (binge-worthy). The hosts provide listeners with an immersive audio experience of investigating criminal activity in America and the determined minds who perform these unspeakable crimes against others. When I say I get chills and sometimes need to take a minute between episodes, I literally get goosebumps and pause the episode. There have been episodes that I have to skip over due to the intensity of the material. Episode 98 even delves into a local crime case from Raleigh, NC! I deal with some pretty heavy stuff in my career - yet this podcast makes it all more real. SO GO LISTEN. But, maybe throw in an episode of Getting Curious or Girls Gotta Eat to lighten things up from time to time?

What will come as no surprise to those of you who know me, I have somewhat of an affinity for Harry Potter and the Wizarding World. My pets, past and present, are named after characters and you can frequently find one of the films playing in the background of my apartment. MuggleCast, which launched in 2005, is the original Harry Potter podcast, going strong with over 50,000 listeners and 350 + episodes (also binge worthy). The show discusses things like Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Fantastic Beasts, the theme parks, the thriving fandom, and — of course! — the original Harry Potter series. This is easily a podcast to get lost in when wanting to escape from the day-to-day. If you’re looking for a silly, fun, and creative podcast - and of course consider yourself one of us who’s Hogwarts letter got lost in the mail years ago - then you should definitely listen to MuggleCast!

From NPR (National Public Radio), Pop Culture Happy Hour is another light and fun podcast where I go to learn about the latest movies, television shows, and overall trends in today’s culture. During the Winter Olympics, PCHH was a great resource to catch up on missed segments and delve more into the culture of life in Pyeongchang. If you’re looking for something quick to listen to in the car on the way home from work and want to stay up to date on the latest trends or what’s going on in the world of entertainment, this is a great podcast to stream.
